What is a research protocol? Is it necessary?
Answer
A research protocol is a detailed plan outlining your research question, and the methods and steps you plan to use to complete your research study including how you will collect and manage your data. A protocol serves as a road map for you to follow as you proceed with your study, and can be used as the first draft of your manuscript. Taking the time to develop a well written protocol can save time for the over-all project and is the first step in ensuring a successful well-conducted study.
Research protocols can be registered and/or published depending on the situation and on the subject area of your research.
