Zotero provides you with 300 MB of free storage. This can fill up quickly. By default, Zotero is set to file sync automatically. File syncing will download attachments with each reference (Zotero library item). Examples of attachments include PDFs, images, audio and video files associated with the reference. The most common type of attachment is the PDF full text of articles. Over time (or rather quickly if you are doing a large project), if you keep file syncing enabled, you will reach the 300 MB limit and be unable to download more Zotero library items.

To disable the file syncing of attachments on a Windows device:

  1. Go to Edit > Settings
  2. On the General tab de-select “Automatically attach associated PDFs and other files when saving items”.

To disable the file syncing of attachments on a Mac:

  1. Click on Zotero > Settings
  2. On the General tab de-select “Automatically attach associated PDFs and other files when saving items”.

For more information on storage and syncing, go to https://www.zotero.org/support/sync.

For more storage space, you can pay for a storage plan.
