How do I find historical monthly and annual total returns for the S&P 500?

Go to S&P Dow Jones Indices - S&P 500. From the Additional Info drop-down menu select Index Earnings to download an Excel file of quarterly returns going back to 1988.

Use the Eikon terminal in the Humanities/McLennan Library, 3rd floor (Room M3-53B).

Use the Bloomberg terminal in the Humanities/McLennan Library, 3rd floor (Room M3-53B). The code for the S&P500 is SPX Index. The Bloomberg code for the S&P 500 total return is SPXT INDEX. To see total returns type SPXT <INDEX> TRA.
